First steps towards sustainable energy in residentials

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals sets relevant targets in particular SDG 7 for Affordable and clean energy, SDG 11 for Sustainable Cities and communities, and SDG 12 for Responsible consumption and production.

Although these goals were adopted by all UN member states 8 years ago, in 2015, the adoption and implementation of sustainable energy for private residentials in Singapore remains to be behind pace. Significant efforts spearheaded through Singapore Green Plan 2030 though National Climate Change Secretariat (NCCS) to encourage and promote usage of renewable energy.

According to NCSS, 40% of Singapore emission comes from Power Generation. Through Green plan, Singapore has set the target of generating at least 2 Gigawatt-peak (GWp) via renewable energy by 2030. A number of initiatives were launched under public-private sectors partnership. As a prime example, there has been 7 tenders issued and awarded under the SolarNova program, equivalent to more than 440 megawatt-peak (MWp) of solar energy. The programme intensify the usage of rooftops of HDBs (Singapore public housing) and Government buildings to generate solar energy.

However, for private residentials, homeowners maintained the control and full ownership of land usage of their property. The pace of adoption has been slower than average. What's the root cause that the renewable energy has not been embraced and adopted?

There has been a lot of desire and aspirations by homeowners in Singapore to install solar systems to generate clean and renewable energy to households. However, the capacity as well as quality of service providers in Singapore has not fully ramped up to meet the demand and desire of the residential owners.

Also, finding proper guidance is difficult. There are various sites that offer myriad of advice, but they are mainly catering for commercial properties that are understandably more ready and equipped to proceed with installations and maintenance.
